This article focuses on two main points: it identifies a new witness of the work of Andrea Cambini (1445-1528), MS Laurenziano Pluteo 62.22 (L), and offers some initial observations based on this discovery. The description of manuscript L – which transmits the unpublished historical treatise on the French kings and French history entitled Storia di Francia – is followed by an analysis of its content in relation to the other known Florentine witness of the treatise, MS Magl. XXIV.166 of the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale (M), which transmits the text under the title Della progenie del Regno de’ Franchi e vita de’ loro Re. A comparison of the two mss. reveals that L transmits a text that has been the object of an extensive rewriting relative to the text present in M – a rewriting that affects not so much the content of the text as its linguistic system, at the orthographical, morphological, syntactical and, to a lesser extent, lexical level. The article goes on to observe that L was written by the same hand as MS II III 59 of the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze (F), which transmits part of Cambini’s translation of Biondo Flavio’s Decades. The article also observes that F, like L, has been subjected to the same type of formal rewriting of the text, which has taken on sixteenth-century linguistic features different from those of Cambini’s own linguistic usage, of the second half of the fifteenth century, which is preserved in the autograph manuscripts of the translation. On the basis of these and other findings the article offers a possible key to interpreting the treatise on France and hypothesizes that L and F are remnants of a publication project that was never completed, since only Cambini’s Libro della origine de’ Turchi et imperio delli Ottomani reached the printing press and was printed multiple times after the princeps of 1529. The three appendices that accompany the essay offer a codicological description of M and publish Cambini’s proem to the historical treatise on France and an excerpt from the first book of the text as transmitted in M and L.
