L'ouvrage a peu d'équivalents. […]

Which animals – real or imaginary – helped construct the power
of the Popes over the centuries? And during the Middle Ages,
the Protestant Reformation or in more recent years, which animals
inspired polemics and satire about the papacy?
Several animals of the papacy are part of our collective memory (the dove, the eagle, the lion). Many others have been forgotten, and yet parrots and peacocks, phoenixes and griffins, leopards and elephants have accompanied the papacy for very long periods of time.
This historical reconstruction is based on a first-hand reinterpretation of a wealth of
textual and iconographic sources. Each chapter follows the historical pathway of one of the various animals, from its very first mention (the 3rd century for the dove, the 6th for the horse, the 11th for the parrot) until its symbolic decline, or tracing its survival to the present day.
These stories of animals are an observatory – fascinating but also incisive –illustrating
how the papacy constructed its power, and the efforts of people to inspire its reform or
make it an object of derision.

The papacy, which is the focus of this volume, was conceived of as a symbolic universe. Thus the real and imagined conditions of the papacy highlight the relationship between
symbols and institutions and between symbols and power, as well as the way these symbols were nurtured, jealously guarded, and deliberately changed according to circumstances. This volume brings together a series of articles published in a daily newspaper between 2005 and 2014. Being provoked by current events, they are fragments of a chronicle of great events: the funeral of Pope John Paul II, the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, the election of Pope Francis, and much more. Many rites and symbols described here were elaborated in the Middle Ages and in Early modern times. Many of them are still used today. But other ancient rites and symbols have been abandoned in recent years, and the articles in this book examine just as much the reasons for abandoning them as those for retaining them.

Chi aveva
il diritto di eleggerlo? Da quando i cardinali entrano in
conclave per eleggere il papa? Quali riti venivano celebrati
storia pontifi cia – percorre l’intera storia dell’elezione e
ecclesiologici e politici.

Lorenzo Bianchi , scetticismo, politica. Per ordinare il volume direttamente online /to place your order online: www.sismel.it ORDER FORM

For over twenty-five years, historians of medieval science, literature and cultural awareness, philosophy, art and representation have exchanged ideas on the relationship between medieval nature and society in Micrologus. Nature, Sciences and Medieval Societies and Micrologus’
Library. Many of the Micrologus conferences – since the first Discorsi dei corpi / Discourses of the Body, Erice 1991, published in 1993 – have been devoted to topics associated with the history of the body, such as sight and vision, the heart, the cadaver, human skin, the five senses, the body and its ornaments, the extremities and growths, the body of the prince, portraiture and representation of the individual, Adam, the first man, and alchemy and medicine.
For this reason we wish to begin this series of e-books with the topic the human body; specifically, a collection of studies on the female body precedes this volume on black skin (medi@evi 5).

The richness and multiplicity of approaches and themes present in the many articles published since 1993 in the journal Micrologus and since 1997 in the series Micrologus’ Library1 have now made it possible for us to undertake a new publishing venture thanks to new technologies. The publication of e-books will, in fact, offer a wider audience of scholars and students monograph collections on subjects

This essay explores some of the papal symbols which assumed particular prominence during the pontificate of Pope Innocent III (1198–1216). These symbols belong to different modes of expression: metaphoric speech and writing (vicarius Christi, the pope's body); clothing (pallium, tiara); objects (the Golden Rose); and visual art (the mosaic in Old St Peter's). It is argued that the pope – and his curia – employed these symbols to represent the special position of authority which the pope held within the Church and society at large, and that several of them played a role in ritual enactments of papal authority. It is furthermore argued that they should be seen as part of a coherent system of symbols and that many of them serve to emphasise the relationship between the pope and Christ, and thus represent Pope Innocent III's ecclesiological programme in which the pope as God's representative on earth plays a pivotal role.

Geomancy had a prominent position among the medieval arts of divination. Outstanding thinkers such as Thomas Aquinas, Albert the Great and Bonaventure dealt with it. Writers and poets quoted geomantic concepts and texts. This volume addresses crucial issues concerning this particular form of prognostication as well as the ecclesiastical reactions and condemnations. Chief texts of Latin medieval geomancy – Hugh of Santalla’s Ars geomantiae, Estimaverunt Indi and the Geomantia ascribed to William of Moerbeke – as well as texts from the Arabic and Hebrew geomantic tradition are carefully investigated here. Attention is also paid to lesserknown forms of divination – onomancy, chiromancy, spatulomancy and astral medicine – and to magic.

The originality of this work – published and dedicated twice to Pope Julius III (1550, 1553) and one time to Pope Pius IV (1560) by the Ravennate physician Tommaso Giannotti Rangoni – has been, not completely unrightly, questioned by Giacomo Leopardi. Its historical interest is however twofold: it was the last of a long series of texts on prolongevity written for popes since the first half of the XIIIth century, and it proposed for the first time an history of the popes underlining the obstacles (historical or medical) of a long life. Moreover, Rangoni shows that the prolongevity of the popes is a very specific one: the popes can hope to bypass not only the traditional mythical temporal length of 120 years, but also – and perhaps more importantly – the (supposed) duration of the reign of Saint Peter («the 25 years of Saint Peter»).

The old historiographical question of whether Avignonese sojourn of the popes corresponded to an ‘exile’ cannot be re-examined by ignoring that the popes were absent from Rome during the 13th century for more than sixty years, spending
around fifty years in the Papal State and ten other years in Lyon. The very strong and regular mobility of the papal court between Innocent III and Benedict XI (1198-1304) does not allow the Avignonese period to be identified as an exile.
Because of the perpetuation of that sojourn, the Avignonese popes did however provoke important consequences. On the one hand, the popes tried to transfer elements of the ‘Roman majesty’ to Avignon, in terms of rituality and self-representation, for needs connected with their legitimation. From a geo-political point of view, the Avignonese period was moreover marked by the reduction of a potential illimited universality of Christianity (as conceived by the papacy from the Gregorian Reform until Boniface VIII) to a Christianity limited to Europe.

The reexamination of history of the papal horse from a strict chronological point of view let arise between the XIIth and the XIIIth century a series of novelties which are in relation with the ecclesiological, institutional and political evolution of the Apostolic See at that time. The textual interest of the pontifical sources for the horse of the pape – and its saddle – is chronological coincident with the attention paid by the papacy to the colours (white and red) of the pope’s vestments. The
aim of that interest is connected with the aspiration of the papacy, particularly from Innocent IIIth on, considering the pope as Vicar of Christ and verus imperator.

A great number of texts coming from different sources – letters, chronicles, reports of the Aragonese representatives at the papal court etc. – reveal that the pope Boniface VIII used quite often what is possible to define as «verbal violence», towards kings, prelates, religious friars and so on. A careful examination of those several witnesses – which are collected in an appendix to this article – allows the hypothesis that Benedetto Caetani was accustomed to using such a «verbal violence» as a mean of
diplomatic pressure and in order to assure his authority, as a cardinal and then as a pope. That, beside emotivity, Caetani’s verbal violence was an instrument of power is confirmed also by the fact that it was often supported by gestures and was probably the result of vocal rethorical experiments,
made privately by the pope in his chamber.

Moving from the reflection on the persona papae from the middle of the XIe century on to Innocent III, the A. examines origins et evolution of a formula grounded on the idea that the pope is greater as the angels – as far as his plenitudo potestatis is concerned. Presented in a complete form at first by Hostiensis (if Antoninus of Florence is correct), this metapher has been discussed in detail by the Augustinian friar Augustinus de Ancona (1243-1328) and then by the archbishop of Florence, Antonnus Pierozzi who could so extend the plenitudo potestatis «ad caelestia, terrestria et infernalia». This important ecclesiological and institutional formula survived at least until the XVIIe century, remaining however controversial among medieval theologians and even more during the Reformation.

"The present volume does constitute a record of the VIth Congress of the International Medieval Latin Committee, which took place in Benevento and Neaples in November 2010. The overarching topic Auctor et Auctoritas is intended in the sense of reflection about auctoritas ‘in’ Medieval Latin texts and about the auctoritas ‘of’ Medieval Latin texts. The articles here published constitute a profound reflection on the concept of auctoritas in medieval culture. They have in mind consideration of the authority of Latin as an oral
and written language; the authority of writing, authors, and their sources; the relation between anonymous and declared authorship; and other, related issues. The present volume has indeed brought to light much innovative and stimulating research into the values of texts in the Medieval Latin world.
The investigations are conducted in some cases on a theoretical level relating to general problems, and in others on a more practical one connected with specific cases. The total of nearly ninety papers reveals a plural vision of the overarching theme, making the volume an extremely useful tool for anyone who wishes to enter the world of the medieval author."

From Innocent III on medieval liturgists and ceremonial masters at the papal court emphasized the ritual differences concerning the celebration of the Eucharist of the pope. This ritual has to be studied with care, because it is deeply connected with the ecclesiological evolution of the papacy from the late Middle Ages till to the Modern Times.

The Zeno Karl Schindler Foundation [http://www.zenokarlschindler-foundation.ch] has established two fellowships, each of them for six to twelve months, to support the development of the «MIRABILE. Digital Archive for Medieval Latin Culture» [www.mirabileweb.it] project maintained by SISMEL (International Society for the Study of Medieval Latin, Via Montebello 7, I-50123 Florence www.sismelfirenze.it). It is intended that the fellows will carry out their fellowships at the seat of the SISMEL following the development agenda of the MIRABILE project, with a monthly stipend of CHF 2,500 (Swiss francs). Applications should be submitted (with curriculum vitae and motivation letter) by July 15, 2019 via email to: Prof. Jean-Yves Tilliette (Jean-Yves.Tilliette@unige.ch). Applications will then be submitted to the MIRABILE Fellowship Scientific Committee for evaluation. The results of the evaluation procedure will be published by August 31, 2019. Winners will be given the opportunity to start the fellowship from the beginning of October 1st, 2019. MIRABILE Fellowship core objectives 1. On-line publication with related search functions of a corpus of texts of medieval Latinity in the MIRABILE site (www.mirabileweb.it), corpus formed by the critical editions of the "Edizioni del Galluzzo" (www.sismel.it). The text will be provided in multiple format such as XML and JSON or PDF. In particular for XML will be used the XML TEI standard, that provides guidelines for the creation of files in xml format. All text file will be transformed in JSON that is the standard format for the management of text used by Elastic Search for indexing. 2. Integration with meta-textual information present in MIRABILE's databases (such as the author, the text itself, the manuscripts that conserve it and the bibliography). The development of this new module will give the ability to insert texts and link those database information to them. The textual part can be loaded by the user inserting it in a text field, or by uploading it via an xml or pdf file. To facilitate the user, a lemmatization algorithm will be used, it will analyze the text contained in the document by detecting the entries in it. 3. To implement an integrated search between the textual corpus in MIRABILE and the Corpus Corporum project of the University of Zurich (http://www.mlat.uzh.ch/MLS/index.php). The integration between the two search engines will allow the users to obtain search results in a single user interface. People with the following characteristics can apply for one of the following profiles or for both, by indicating it explicitely 1. First profile Ability to understand and process texts in pdf and in xml tei formats and link them to other meta-textual information present in MIRABILE (able to correctly identify a text of medieval Latinity); a. Good knowledge of Latin b. Knowledge of xml and xml tei formats c. Basic knowledge of authors, texts and manuscripts of medieval Latinity

extensive databases and the journals produced by the
Società Internazionale per lo Studio del Medioevo
Latino (www.sismelfirenze.it), the Fondazione
Ezio Franceschini (www.fefonlus.it)
and, since the beginning of 2012, significant
databases from other organizations and research
institutes. In addition to Medieval Latin culture
(Medieval Latin database), MIRABILE includes medieval
vernacular culture (Romance database) and a specific section
devoted to hagiographic texts and manuscripts (Hagiographic
database).
Since July, 2014 MIRABILE has expanded with new databases:
ABC. Ancient Camaldolese Library, ROME. Collection
of Medieval Sermons, TETRA. Mediaeval Latin
Texts and their Transmission, TRAMP. Manuscript Tradition
of the Church Fathers, TECOLM. Texts and Codices
of Medieval Lombardy, TRALIRO. Hypertext catalogue
of the Romance Lyric Tradition from Its Origins.
Moreover, in addition to the Journals, now is available a
new section devoted to the miscellany volumes published
by Edizioni del Galluzzo.
All the contents are available in an integrated format such
that online access is even more profitable, opening possibilities
for multidisciplinary research.
At the moment, MIRABILE contains information on approximately
108,000 manuscripts, 17,800 authors, and
340,000 bibliographic records; in addition, 1,600 journal
articles and 1,080 miscellany volumes essays in PDF format
